PROGRAMMABLE ATTENUATOR ACCESSORIES

A Logical Interface for Electromechanical Devices!

The Aeroflex / Weinschel Model 8210A SmartStep Interface provides a flexible, low-cost solution for the operation of programmable step attenuators and other electromechanical devices under computer control. Designed to interface to Aeroflex / Weinschel's new line of SmartStep programmable attenuators, the 8210A represents a new concept in device control applications for bench test and subsystem designs. The 8210A provides a high-level interface from various industry standard communications interfaces, including IEEE-488 and RS232/RS422/RS485, to the SmartStep's serial Driver Interface Bus.

The Driver Interface Bus (DIB) is a system for connecting a number of relatively low-speed I/O devices to a host, providing a simple, uniform, and inexpensive way to control a variety of devices via a single port. The DIB is based on the two-wire I2C serial bus and several software protocol layers that allow the SmartStep Interface to address up to 125 peripheral devices, with serial data rates of up to 100 KHz. The DIB may also be used to supply DC power to the devices, resulting in a simple, low-cost interconnection system.

The SmartStep Interface is available in several models, each providing a different type of communications interface to suit the user's configuration requirements. Each model contains similar capabilities, and provides switch-selectable parameters to tailor the Interface's operation. The serial models (RS232/422/485) have selectable baud rates up to 115 K, parity, and handshake options, while the GPIB model allows for a user-selectable address. RS232 can be used in standard PC communications for short-to-medium distances (approx 50 ft). RS422 and RS485 allow for very long distance (4000 ft @ 115K) communications. RS422 is similar to RS232 in that it is optimized as a single node protocol, typically with one device connected to a single port. RS485 is optimized for multi-drop connections that can be used to create a low-cost network.

TTL Driver Boards for
3200 Series Programmables

Aeroflex / Weinschel now offers inexpensive TTL driver boards for its 3200 Series Programmable Attenuators.  These boards are available two types, either a 10 pin ribbon cable (option -1) or 15 pin "D" connector (option -2).  Option 2 fits limited models refer to the 3200 Series Data Sheet for specific information.
